Summer Guitar Course Krzyzowa 2003

The Summer Guitar Course will be held at the International House of Youth Meetings in Krzyżowa, located in the picturesque beauty of the Palace and nearby complex. Participants will be treated to stylish accommodation in modern hotel rooms and have use of excellent facilities including fully equipped conference rooms, a large concert hall, a canteen and sports facilities including fitness room, sauna, table tennis, billiards and 5-a-side football. The participants are therefore able not only to enjoy themselves but also to improve their health and fitness levels at the same time.



  • Flamenco Dance - a dance course included in the flamenco workshop run by the eminent Polish Flamenco dancer Anna Mendak.
  • Alexander Technique (Tai Chi for musicians) - a sensational up-to-date method of perfecting body and mind, adjusted to instrumentalists` individual needs. It helps to control stress, improves coordination and performance quality and ensures a good frame of mind. Classes are run by Master Tai Chi Chuan and a pianist and organist from Germany, Otto Haizmann.
  • Fingerstyle - this course will be introduced by Peter Finger, a guitar virtuoso, composer and publisher of Akustik Gitarre magazine from Germany.
  • Samba & bossa nova - classes will be run by Venezuelan Ernesto Chuecos, a prominent guitarist and vocalist, and the pre-eminent performers Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Gilberto and Luis Bonfa.




Beata Będkowska-Huang is currently one of the most important figures on the Polish guitar scene. She began studying the guitar in the Secondary School of Music in Katowice under prof. Edmund Jurkowski. Under his tutoring, from 1986, she studied at the Academy of Music in Katowice, from which she graduated cum laude in 1990 under tutor Wanda Palacz. As DAAD grant holder she began studying abroad in Freiburg, Germany. In 1994 she completed with honours her postgraduate studies, and in 1996 her soloist studies under prof. Sonja Prunnbauer. She developed her skills at master classes conducted by renowned guitarists, including: David Russell, Wolfgang Lendle, Thomas Muller-Pering, and David Starobin. Beata Będkowska-Huang has been a prize winner at numerous international guitar competitions. She won top prizes in Tychy, Freiburg, Munich, Benicasim (Spain), Frechen (Germany), Tredez-Loquemeau (France). She performed in Germany, Italy, Belgium, Spain, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and the USA at "Augustine Recital Series" in New York

Martin Myslivecek (who comes to Krzyżowa from 29.07 to 02.08.2003) - soloist, chamber musician, teacher, music life activist and a great popularizer of guitar. Graduated from Brno Conservatory where he studied under Prof. A.Sadlik and the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Weimar. Studied early music and lute performance at the Early Music Centre in London and has given concerts in numerous European countries, Latin America and the USA. Professor at the Universitat fur Musik in Graz, Austria, since 1997, he is also the co-organiser and Artistic Director of the International Guitar Festival in Mikulov, Czech Republic.

Ewa Margareta Cyran - graduated from Katowice Music Academy under Asst. Prof. Edmund Jurkowski before working at Wyzsza Szkola Pedagogiczna (College of Higher Education) in Częstochowa. Permanently resident in Germany since 1987, Ewa is a teacher at the Musikschule der Hofer Symphoniker in Hof, running classes in classical, electric and bass guitar. Performs on stage as a soloist or in duo with Austrian composer Dietmar Ungerank, flautist Andrea Schlegel-Nolte and eminent German singer and actress Gina Pietsch. Also conducts method seminars.

Ryszard Bałauszko - studied in F.Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw under Prof. Marcin Zalewski, and then in Conservatorio Superior in Alicante, Spain, under Jose Thomas. At present, guitar teacher in Warsaw Music Academy and its branch in Białystok. Also runs guitar classes in F.Chopin Music School of II degree in Warsaw. Appears on stage solo, as a member of chamber orchestras and as a soloist with philharmonic orchestras. Conducted numerous guitar courses in Poland and Spain. Worked as a juror in many national and international music competitions in Poland and abroad.

Thomas Liauw - guitarist, teacher, composer, arranger, frutti-di-mare lover and guitar popularizer from Singapore. Studied music in Singapore and pedagogy in London. At present, runs widespread didactic activity in Singapore at such places as the Yamaha Music School and the University of Singapore. Performed in England, Iceland, Malaysia and Singapore. His considerable musical work in Singapore has included organizing concerts of such celebrities as John Williams, Manuel Barueco and Jorge Morel. Also organizes the prestigious International Guitar Festival in Singapore.

Piotr Zaleski completed his guitar studies in 1979 in Hochschule fur Musik in Weimar (Germany) in the class of prof. Ursula Peter and prof. Monika Rost. He gave concerts in the whole Europe, playing solo, with symphonic orchestras and in a duo with a flute player. He was a leader of master courses in Poland, Germany, Holland, Spain, Hungary and Czech Republic. He has educated many prize-winners of Polish and international guitar competitions. In 1991-1993 he was a Dean of Instrumental Faculty at the Music Academy in Wroclaw (he is at present professor of this Academy).

Jarema Klich - studied guitar in Wrocław Music School of II degree under Prof. Jan Prochownik, then in Wrocław Music Academy under Prof. Piotr Zaleski. Currently Assistant Professor in his home academy. Performed on stage in nearly all European countries as well as in Egypt, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Chile. Won particular fame and recognition through concerts with Krzysztof Pełech. Co-organizer of the Summer Guitar Course in Krzyżowa.

Krzysztof Pełech - graduated with distinction from K.Lipiński Music Academy in Wrocław under Prof. Piotr Zaleski. In 1992-1993 studied under Prof. Gordon Crosskey in the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Participated in 21 national and international competitions, winning 16 of them. Has given concerts in nearly every European country, USA, Brazil, South America. Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Chile and Egypt. Co-founder and Artistic Director of Wrocław International Guitar Festival, and founder of The Summer Guitar Course in Krzyżowa.


Early music

The outstanding English lutenist and promoter, Ben Salfield, will conduct classes on the lute. After his debut, at 17, critics described him as "comparable to such masters as Julian Bream", whose tradition he is sometimes seen as continuing. Hailed as "one of the most exciting lutenists of his generation", he performs both solo and in various duos and has appeared in most European countries and broadcast on radio and television. Ben Salfield is an eminent interpreter of John Dowland`s music and considered as an exponent of the modern renaissance style of peformance. His classes will include developing improvisation skills and writing divisions, interpreting the meaning behind music and the honing of performance techniques. Music will include popular music by Dowland and examples of anonymous pieces such as Lost Is My Lyberty.


Flamenco workshops

Flamenco workshops will be run by Jakub Niedoborek, an excellent classical guitarist, flamenco expert and virtuoso, together with Sławomir Dolata, one of the best Polish flamenco guitarists and leader of the popular flamenco group Danza del Fuego.


This year, the flamenco workshop will be accompanied by a dance course conducted by distinguished Polish flamenco dancer Anna Mendak, whose artistic projects have included numerous performances with popular Polish flamenco groups Danza del Fuego, Sueno Andaluz, Acid Flamenco, both in Poland and abroad.


Jazz workshops

Jazz workshops will be run by one of the most outstanding Polish jazzmen, Janusz Strobel.

Janusz Strobel, together with Henryk Alber, founded the legendary guitar duet Alber-Strobel, one of the most interesting in the whole of Polish music history. Janusz Strobel has composed a number of hits performed by the greatest Polish singers including Ewa Bem, Hanna Banaszak, Ryszard Rynkowski and Irena Santor. Founded several jazz formations, in which he cooperated with jazz frontmen. The album "Janusz Strobel" (including his own music) was recorded in 1993 with a trio group for Miraphon Records. Both public and critics hailed the recording, and it won the "Album of the Year" award in its category.


Classes for beginners

This group activity is for beginners of all ages - anyone taking their first steps in music. The classes will be run by an American guitarist and teacher, now living permanently in France, David McDonald, who for many years has organized summer courses for children in the small Alpine village of Petit Bornand.


Chamber music groups

The classes will be run by Dietmar Ungerank, an Austrian composer and guitarist. Started his career in a rock group, but since 1975 has been dedicated entirely to playing classical guitar, lute and theorbo. He teaches in Musikschule der Hofer Symphoniker. Initiator and Director of Inernationale Seminar fur Gitarre Hof/Saale between 1982-1988, he is also a composer for the guitar and writer of theatre music. Accompanies such well-known singer as Gina Pietsch, a well-recognised performer of B.Brecht songs. Has given concerts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Holland and other places.


Guitar orchestra

During the Summer Guitar Course in Krzyżowa the participants will be encouraged to form a guitar orchestra, Taking part in rehearsals and the concert will give the young guitarists the rare opportunity to gain experience in working with a conductor, and moreover, will surely become an unforgettable artistic adventure. Participants are strongly encouraged to join in.
